Muhammad Nur'Ayunnie Hazim bin Shafi'i

22, Male, Malaysian

Student ID : 0319316

MBBS, Batch 6

At 22, I envision myself 15 years from now, as part of an international medical volunteer team, sipping 'masala chai' on a train to Kolkata; standing or sitting would not matter as it would highly depend on how efficient the public transportation in India has evolved or assuming if nothing has changed, one could only hope that less than few hundreds of the usual crowd were taking the train on that day. Or if my work isn't taking me to India, I could easily imagine myself comfortably listening to Macklemore's latest album on a plane enroute to Kenya to help at the local hospitals and villages for at least 3 to 5 months before I head for another adventure in another part of the world.

This is my dream and the reason why I am a medical student now - to be out there in different places in the world; offering my service, knowledge and experience.

Travelling and volunteering have always been my passions. So do listening to music, graphic design, teaching, politics, inter-religious studies and running on a treadmill with Another One Bites The Dust blasting in my ears.  Medicine is a career path that I have chosen because I believe I am able to incorporate those things that I am passionate about in life into the life that I am hoping to live as a physician one day.

But my dream does not end once I have graduated as a medical doctor. As like any normal young people, aside from our careless and rebellious nature, I too have hope, visions and ideas for my beloved country Malaysia. At one point of my life, I wish to pursue in a political career, not as an 'empty-minded' politician that only acts in pursuit of his own political interests but as a People's representative that wishes to provide solutions and ideas to improve our country especially on our medical system as well as education.

As for now, my goal as a medical student is not only to strive in the academic aspect of the MBBS course but to mould myself to be a well-rounded 'person' whom is able to empathise not only with my future patients but to those people that I meet and talk to during my travels or volunteer work. I would also want to be able to communicate effectively and bring comfort to my patients with my words, gestures and willingness to listen and gain trust from those who seek my help as a physician. I also want to be ethical and professional in my work and whatever I do as a student now and as a physician in the future. Most importantly, my goal is to be a part of the global society that helps one another and learn, share and contribute from the experience and the knowledge we have.
