Clinical Skills

If we learn Anatomy, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology and so on for the theoretical value of practicing medicine, Clinical Skills subject is a concept that take the theoretical part of medicine into practice in which students are taught of communication, practical and diagnostic skills. Basically in a clinical skills class, students are expected to learn how to perform certain examination procedures, why they are performed and what the possible findings might mean.

I have certainly learned a lot from the Clinical Skills subject and the things that I have learned in clinical classes I was able to practice them during my medical volunteer work. For example, during my medical volunteer work at the HOPE clinic, I was given the opportunity to measure the blood pressure and blood glucose levels of the patients and carry out electrocardiography (ECG) under the supervision of the doctor and nurse there.

And recently in Cardiovascular system (CVS) block, we learned more on Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques, general examinations as well as specific examinations for CVS. Although with ample time to practice CPR, during our recent Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), I was unable to perform CPR properly under stress. This made me realised that even with the proper

techniques and sufficient amount of practice I must be able to work under pressure and be confident at all times in order to carry out any single performance skill successfully.
