The Baju Raya Project (please click on the image to enlarge)

The Baju Raya Project is a movement consists of entirely young, creative and hardworking young Malaysians that believe the step for a better and united society starts with the initiative to bring people together to help others.

In June 2014, my friends and I joined The Baju Raya Project, an initiative that was spearheaded entirely by Malaysian youths that aim to collect used or new Raya clothes donated by the public and sent them to orphanages around Kuala Lumpur (KL) and Klang Valley, Selangor. The Baju Raya Project is a yearly event that see the participation of youths from different background, race and religions.

The NGO Pertubuhan Projek Kasih that organizes the event isn't exactly new to me as I have worked with the NGO a couple of times including designing the NGO's logo and writing an article for an online news portal - Malaysia.my on the Baju Raya Project event. My sister also happens to be one of the committee members of Pertubuhan Projek Kasih.

The Baju Raya Project event took place at the Federal Territory Mosque where people around KL and Selangor would be able to drop off their items. I was stationed at the main entrance of the mosque to help donors to carry their used or new clothes into the mosque to be sorted out, folded and packed by other volunteers. It was truly a challenging task being under the sun for almost 5 hours as it was during the Ramadan, a holy month for all muslims as they are required to fast for a whole month.

By 3 pm, we stopped accepting donations and begin to distribute the donated items to orphanages around KL and Klang Valley. My friends and I chose to join a convoy to Pusat Perlindungan Nur Qaseh in Taman Melawati, KL. Unfortunately, we didn't get the chance to meet almost all the children at the orphanage as they were attending other program. However, we were able to hand over the clothes to the staffs of the orphanage.

The Baju Raya Project was truly inspiring to me as it proves that the Malaysian youths of different races, religions and backgrounds are able to unite under one cause with the vision of a better community and better Malaysia.
