Reaching Out To The Underprivileged (click on the image to enlarge)

A humble initiative by different groups of young and senior activists alike to reach out to those underprivileged families and individuals living in Kuala Lumpur.

The Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman or also famously known as Jalan TAR is a well-known street for underprivileged people in Kuala Lumpur (KL) to gather every Saturday and Sunday night to collect generous donations and offerings by numerous NGOs and activitists like the Region of Love and the Pertiwi Soup Kitchen. I had the chance to join different NGOs and once a group of independent so-called activists from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) multiple of times to approach and help the underprivileged and homeless community in KL.

One particular NGO that I enjoy working with is the Region of Love. It is an NGO that aims to offer solutions to the problems faced by the poverty-stricken people of KL that come to Jalan TAR. A complaint counter dubbed as The People's Complaint Counter is set up every Saturday night for the people to come and present their problems. All sort of people with all sort of issues would come to the counter and we volunteers would always ready to listen no matter how trivial or complicated the problem is. One time, a man came to me and along with him was a young boy aged 12. The man who works at a night market claimed that he found this young boy wandering off by himself and took him into his care. Apparently, both parents of the boy had left him when he was 12 and now the boy has no one but the stranger that took pity of him. The man wanted help from the NGO to help the 12 year old boy to get a Malaysian identity card and place him at an orphanage where he can be better taken care of and properly schooled as the man was poor and unable to support the child. A report was made and the details of the man and the boy was taken to make a proper arrangement for the boy. I was truly moved by the good intention of the man whom was willing to help a stranger in need.

Other than that, I also joined the weekly program with the underprivileged children by educating them through story-telling sessions, dancing and many more. We also had other activities like teaching them the proper ways to wash their hands, teaching them how to read and creating awareness on the importance of staying at school. We believe that the children at Jalan TAR, despite their shortcomings, should not be neglected and should be motivated and encouraged at all times.
