Pharmacology

Medicine is a science of uncertainty and an art of probability. - William Osler

I truly enjoy Pharmacology partly due to the lecturers whom are fantastic teachers and of course mostly due to the subject itself. I consider Pharmacology as a science that offers somekind of solutions to health problems faced by humans, of course in its limited kind of way. Throughout the history of mankind, we have discovered and created thousands or maybe millions of medicine that are believed to be able to treat certain kind of diseases but diseases remain as one of the top causes of death to the human population. As many more new diseases emerge and existing diseases become immuned to old treatments, the pharmaceutical industry continues to grow to produce a better and most effective medicine there is.

Pharmacology introduces us to different kind of medicines to treat certain diseases taking into account of their therapeutic effects, side-effects and how well they respond to different individuals who has different conditions like asthma or a history of hypertension. It is a very interesting subject though I have to admit that, it requires a lot of memorizing but understanding different mechanisms of action, side effects and therapeutic value of the drug do play a very important role when

you are practicing medicine in the future. I know this because working as a volunteer at the HOPE clinic in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur as the assistant to the doctor there, I learned that as a doctor, you need to take into consideration of the patient's age, gender, ability to afford the medication, other conditions like hypertension or asthma and the effectiveness of the medicine before prescribing the medication to the patient.
